The Season
The glorious 2020 season continues. We have had more regular rain fall and there is more forecast. This has led to an explosion of grass which is now shoulder high in many paddocks. Spent the morning repairing the slasher. The clutch has failed after a serious workout over the last three weeks. We are making tracks through the grass in order to get around and in some parts preparing fire breaks in case of a grass fire later in the summer.
Elections
The AWA Elections for council are now complete and unlike in the USA we have a winner. Charlie Perry is our new President. For those who do not know him he is a young dynamic guy with an exciting background in both business and agriculture. It could be said that this was a victory for a more progressive approach to the development of the Wagyu breed.
We have used one of Charlie’s bulls, (TBRFN232) from his Trent Bridge property at Koolang Wagyu for three years and while his figures are no longer in the top percentile he has been a very solid and useful part of our breeding program.
Vale Simon Coates
It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing Dr. Simon Coates last week. Simon was a real pioneer in the Wagyu industry and a previous President of the Australian Wagyu Association. His Wagyu business, Sumo Wagyu Australia, is one of the most important players in our industry.
Again, we have used Sumo Wagyu genetics intensively in building the quality herd at Koolang Wagyu. Just this year we purchased another excellent cover bull from Simon. SMOFP0645 is out with our Full Blood Wagyu females right now.
